GSH Axe Throwing Wrap Up

Updated: Mar 20, 2022

February 24th, 2022

The Geophysical Society of Houston hosted the first annual Axe Throwing Social sponsored by Oxy, TGS, and RPS on Thursday, February 24th.

Safety first! The night started off with a coaching session from the BATL axe-throwing coaches and the check-in of all our participants.

Although there was a great, diverse group, most had never thrown an axe before. After a much needed warm-up on a cold Houston night, the real fun began: the Axe-throwing competition!

For those who have not had their first axe-perience, the aim of the game is similar to darts. You throw your axe at a large bullseye. The closer you get to the center, the more points you earn.

The tournament was 1-on-1 round-robin match play. The group watched competitive match-ups and discussed the latest industry news all over artisan pizza and drinks.

After the round robin match-ups, the points were tallied and the top 4 competitors squared off in a bracket style elimination match. At the end, our very own Peter Lanzarone won Axe King with his signature one-hand throw.

It was an amazing axe-perience, and hope to have a round two soon!
