Case Study Seminar II builds on the success of the first joint GSH-HGS event delivered in 2024. The joint society committee designed the agenda with one concept in mind: there is no straight path to success, and we learn through trial and error.

We designed the seminar to focus on a learning process that goes beyond published results and polished conference conclusions. This event provided exclusive access to newly released content not available elsewhere. The goal of the series is to share the real lessons - the unpublished insights, the mistakes we learned from, and the persistence in project delivery.

Our speakers created a space for honest reflection on the pitfalls they have encountered in seismic interpretation, geologic modeling, established perceptions and methodologies, and on the breakthroughs that came from paying attention to the minor details.
The presentations and panel discussions with audience engagement challenged us to ask why present approaches matter — how they have shaped better decisions, reduced uncertainty, and helped us find more resources.
The Case Studies Seminar focused on integrating the disciplines during project delivery, whereas historically, geological, and geophysical societies have focused on developing disciplinary methodologies.
Case Study Seminar II was delivered to a full audience, fulfilling its promise of a thought-provoking exchange of experiences, where curiosity shapes the evolution of knowledge and drives innovation.
Building Legacy
"The joint GSH-HGS Case Study initiative is tremendously valuable to early-career geoscientists and students," said Charles Sternbach, co-chair of the first 2024 event, in an interview. "Star Creek Energy sponsored 17 geology and geophysics graduate students, a tradition the company is pleased to continue."
” The GSH/HGS Case Study Seminar grew from a cooperative effort between the HGS and GSH, championed by the originating co-chairs, Katya Casey and me,” continued Charles. “I learned from the 'Discovery Thinking' program, Charles Sternbach. Katya also has many years’ experiences with Case Studies. Charles learned from organizing well-attended Discovery Thinking programs at the SEG/AAPG IMAGE that geoscientists value immersive Integrated Case studies of success, particularly when presented by those with firsthand experience. GSH and HGS leadership enthusiastically endorsed the innovative proposal for a joint society event, and the first 1-day program, held on 11/14/2023, drew 144 attendees and was a financial success for both societies.
