What does a geophysicist do after retirement? People often say that retirement is a time when "the world is your oyster," and there is a great deal of truth in that. For many, it becomes an opportunity to explore interests that a busy career never allowed. For me, that journey unexpectedly led to volunteering with the Geophysical Society of Houston.

Mike Graul passed away in January 2026 and will be deeply missed by the geophysical community - worldwide. Mike Graul devoted more than 60+ years to the advancement of geophysics through industry leadership, education, research, and extraordinary service to professional societies. After earning his BS in Geophysics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1957, he began his career at Chevron Corporation, where he spent 23 years working across every facet of exploration geophysics.

Vantage Geophysical once again demonstrated its commitment to community service and environmental stewardship by volunteering at the Geophysical Society of Houston’s E-waste collection.
